Aadhaar card is a 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The UIDAI is a central government agency which provides Aadhaar for every citizen of India. Aadhaar is the world’s largest biometric ID system. The Aadhaar is issued to all citizens of India. The enrolment is free of cost.
A resident Indian can apply for the Aadhaar number and card by submitting the existing proof of identity(passport, PAN card etc) and by undergoing biometric profiling(fingerprints and iris scan) at any Aadhaar center. It is the sole responsibility of an individual to enroll himself for Aadhaar card. It not only gives identity but also provides citizenship.
After you have enrolled for Aadhaar, the officials there would give you an acknowledgment slip through which you can check the status of delivery. It usually takes 60-90 days to deliver it in registered address.
